WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY)– Earth Day is Monday, and one Wilmington community has been celebrating all week in their own unique way.
The Brookdale senior living community had a “Mater Mania” this afternoon, which is a party all about tomatoes.
Cooks prepared all sorts of dishes featuring the red vegetable, or fruit, depending on who you ask.
Everything from salsa and sandwiches were on the menu, all made from local ingredients. Including some grown right at Brookdale.
To get ready for today’s event, the residents have been cultivating tomatoes, basil, and rosemary.
Kayla Jakubczak is the Sales Manager at Brookdale Wilmington. She says events like these are always meaningful and fun for the residents.
“Eating that fresh white bread, that fresh tomato sandwich with Dukes mayonnaise really kind of brings them back to maybe their childhood, or making them with their families,” said Jakubczak. “It gives them a chance to reminisce, as well as just share that new experience all in one.”
Several of the seniors are part of a “Green Thumb Club”. They make sure the plants and flowers stay beautiful all spring long, and not just on Earth Day.
